The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM), one of the nation’s newest and most innovative medical schools, located in beautiful Las Cruces, New Mexico, invites applications for two full-time, 12-month faculty positions, a passion for teaching and mentoring in the discipline of Primary Care Medicine.
The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine seeks to fill up to two (2) faculty positions in the clinical disciplines with an emphasis on teaching didactic medical topics to undergraduate medical students.
Specific Faculty Responsibilities: •Approximately 80% time and effort devoted to delivering instruction in the first and second year medical student curriculum.
•Work collaboratively with other faculty members to develop and refine the integrated and interdisciplinary medical curriculum (1st and 2nd year).
•Supervise, advise, and mentor medical students through the curriculum.
•Approximately 20% time and effort devoted to service to the college including committee responsibilities, student mentoring, interviewing prospective students, etc.
•Develop and prepare teaching materials (presentations, lectures, exam items, etc.).
•Demonstrate professionalism as defined by the BCOM declaration of faculty professionalism and responsibility.
Teaching is the primary focus of our faculty. The College has implemented a spiral, modified systems-based curriculum that will integrate disciplines to facilitate a comprehensive integration of the basic sciences into clinic applications.
The successful candidate will function as a member of a collaborative teaching team to develop and deliver their instructional content within an integrated curriculum. Primary responsibilities will involve teaching medical students through the systems-based courses during the first two years. Integration with basic sciences and clinical learning in order to help students apply foundational scientific and clinical knowledge in the clinical clerkship setting.
•Terminal degree (DO, MD).
•Evidence of or interest in teaching foundational science in a medical school setting.
•Evidence of, or the potential for growth in, teaching, scholarly activity and service.
•Prior clinical experience in Family Medicine or General Internal Medicine is preferred.
•Experience using or knowledge of innovative teaching methods which might include team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, curriculum delivery systems (e.g. Canvas), and proficiency in exam item writing (USMLE and/or COMLEX-style).
•Experience with or interest in curricular and instructional design.
This full-time, 12-month position is available immediately. This position is an educational appointment reporting directly to the Chair of the appropriate academic department, and is dependent on approval of funding.
