::Copper Hills Youth Center is a 197-bed private residential treatment center for adolescents 12-17 years of age. We counsel, teach and mentor children placed in our care and give each child a chance to make successful changes. We strive to improve lives and help children help themselves. At Copper Hills, we treat boys and girls who have emotional, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. We also specialize in caring for patients with Asperger's syndrome. For youth with co-existing substance abuse problems, we offer weekly individualized therapy that focuses on education, recovery and abstinence. Our accredited private school allows students to continue their education while receiving treatment.
Assists in the development of a therapeutic culture and facilitates efficient milieu structure and administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
___ 1. Partners with Director of Residential Services and Clinical Director of Residential Services to implement clinical interventions for residents and communicates observations, issues and problems to help ensure individualized treatment is provided.
___2. Updates treatment plans and assists with treatment reviews for unit residents. May provide treatment summaries to Therapists for use in discharge planning.
___3. Oversees resident mentor program.
___4 Trains and supervises Program Shift Managers. Oversees unit specific training and cross-training of unit staff. Acts as the unit "expert" for programs such as CPI, verbal de-escalation, crisis management, milieu management, SPARCS, DDP (PACE, 21Ss) and facilitation of psycho-educational groups.
___5. Responds to codes whenever available to assist and ensure proper procedure is followed and follows up immediately on any coaching or training needs indicated during code. Directs and participates in contraband and room searches as needed.
___6. Coordinates with Director of Residential Services for planning and facilitation of staff meetings with unit staff, providing training as necessary.
___7. Partners with Director of Residential Services and Human Resources in scheduling in-service training and following up with staff as needed.
___8. Handles emergency situations in conjunction with Director of Residential Services. This responsibility may include being on-call when off duty. On call requires the ability to report to work during emergency situations and coordinating additional back up staff when necessary.
___9. Consults with Scheduling Coordinator regarding unit scheduling issues and team concerns.
___10. Handles coverage for day to day unexpected absenteeism issues. Works together with other Milieu Coordinators to direct positioning/placement of Mental Health Workers throughout the facility for maximum coverage and optimal supervision at all times.
___11. Partners with Scheduling Coordinator, Director of Residential Services, and Human Resources to hire effectively to maintain staffing ratios, accommodate transfers and promotions (including selection of Unit Shift Managers) and uses strategies to encourage staff retention.
___12. Demonstrates flexibility, emotional maturity and confidentiality when handling crisis or sensitive issues. Partners with Director of Residential Services, Human Resources and Risk Management as needed to assist with investigations of incidents and concerns.
___13. Provides back up support for Program Shift Manager absence when necessary. Is able to perform all tasks of the Program Shift Manager and Mental Health Worker positions and can temporarily step into these roles as necessary.
___14. With the Director of Residential Services and Program Shift Managers, continuously assesses the overall programming to determine if and when changes are necessary for optimum functioning.
15. Adheres to all facility policies and procedures and assures compliance with Company policies and procedures through observations and examination of unit activity, workflow and documentation. Provides feedback and recommendations regarding staff interventions and behaviors to Director of Residential Services and applies appropriate interventions at his/her direction.
___16. Ensure completion and accuracy of Patient Observation Forms through audit, supervisory oversight, and training of Program Shift Managers to provide oversight.
___17. Under the direction of the Director of Residential Services, coaches and mentors line staff, providing on the job training to assist staff in teaching residents the necessary skills to function in the environment, deal with medical reactions, control potentially explosive resident situations, generate motivation and acceptance of responsibility in residents, provide emotional support, maintain a positive and objective attitude and act as role models and advocates for the residents.
___18. Models and encourages a team oriented approach to caring for residents by supporting nursing and therapy services.
___19. Acts as a role model for both residents and staff and helps facilitate problem solving and the use of coping skills.
___20. Helps ensure the use of non violent behavior interventions and appropriate and effective use of de-escalation techniques with agitated residents. Coaches staff to avoid power struggles with residents. Advocates for resident rights and treats residents and staff with respect at all times.
___21. Processes camera reviews with staff to improve de-escalation efforts and milieu culture.
___22. Reviews communication logs and check-off sheets for accuracy and follow-through to monitor residents and at-risk behaviors and coaches staff to conduct constant observations of residents on precautions.
___23. Ensures that unit schedule is current and is followed appropriately. Monitors phase system administration in conjunction with Program Shift Managers.
___24. Utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills to address issues and needs in a concise, accurate and considerate manner. Promotes service excellence and the effectiveness of good communication skills to peers.
___25. Participates in maintaining safety of the milieu environment by encouraging unit cleanliness and hazard awareness, identification and removal of contraband, and appropriate response to dangerous situations. Reports all safety concerns immediately to Director of Residential Services. Performs daily inspection of unit for Safety, Personalization, and Cleanliness including: safety issues, maintenance/repair concerns, contraband, graffiti, etc.
___26. Assists with admission process of clients, including introductions to staff and facility, disposition of valuables and orientation to assigned unit and rules.
___27. Assists with mock audits and facility preparation for regulatory and compliance audits by licensors and referral sources.
___28. Assists with implementation of special programs and projects. Helps research and prepare materials for groups and skills development efforts.
___29. Maintains professional, harmonious and effective working relationships with members of all departments and direct care staff, assisting them as necessary and always demonstrating awareness of residents' best interests.
30. Demonstrates thorough program knowledge and understanding of milieu structure and schedules.
___31. Demonstrates knowledge of youth group behavior, developmental abilities and needs in vocational, recreation, and educational activities, as well as activities of daily living, knowledge of group design and de-escalation and processing techniques.
___32. Administers Petty Cash accounts, resident reward programs and resident trust accounts (i.e., shopping and outings) within budget limits and approval authority under the direction of the Clinical Director of Residential Services. Secures company resources as needed for meeting basic needs for residents lacking funds in their trust accounts.
___33. Responsible for maintaining unit inventories of supplies through requisition and distribution from Central Supply.
___34. Attends scheduled meetings as assigned by Director of Residential Services including treatment reviews, Program Team Meetings, and Resident Team Meetings
___35. Manages and maintains unit storage of residents' personal belongings (i.e., inventory sheets, sharps, and resident valuables.), keeping storage rooms and sheds clean, orderly and secure.
___36. Completes performance evaluations of unit staff utilizing input from Director of Residential Services, Program Shift Managers and personal direct observation.
___37. Ensures awareness, availability, and compliance of student handbook.
___38. Supports the Resident Advocate with the grievance process by quickly addressing and following up on resident grievances.
___39. Implements meaningful reinforcement with their units including behavioral contracts, incentives, and unit celebrations.
