An Overview of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital
Known for its compassionate and quality care, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital traces its mission back to 1882, when five Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy opened St. Francis Infirmary in downtown Charleston as the first Catholic hospital in the state.
The hospital formerly was owned by Bon Secours Health System, Inc. and maintains its affiliation with the not-for-profit Catholic health system. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is the Catholic facility within the Roper St. Francis system and follows the “Ethical and Religious Directives of Catholic Healthcare.” As part of Bon Secours Health System’s sponsorship of the hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital has a director of mission who is based in the facility to help maintain its Catholic identity. That sponsorship also calls for a vice president of mission for Roper St. Francis; that position is charged with enhancing the shared values of the founding members of the overall healthcare system. Bon Secours Health System, Inc. appoints two members of the hospital’s governing board, and one of those members serves as president. Bon Secours Health System also appoints six of the 13 members to the overall healthcare system board.
Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital relocated in 1996 to an expansive, oak-graced campus in the Charleston community that is west of the Ashley River. The new facility offers the latest medical technology and comprehensive acute care while honoring its commitment to care for the whole person – physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital has received numerous state and national awards, including Top 100 Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, a five-out-of-five-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and America’s Best 100 Hospitals by Healthgrades.
It twice has earned prestigious Magnet® Hospital recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The designation is considered the ultimate gold seal for nursing among hospitals worldwide. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital was the first Magnet hospital in South Carolina and is one of only four Magnet hospitals statewide.
Roper St. Francis annually hires a third-party company to measure its teammate engagement scores, which show how vested teammates are in its mission and ministry. The hospital’s scores have ranked in the top 10 percent nationally for 15 consecutive years.
We are vibrant and growing.
