This role will be based on our largest campus, which houses a level one trauma center and a dedicated pediatric hospital. It will involve traveling to additional Advocate Hospitals in the surrounding area providing educational support.
The Cancer Institute Genetic Counselor is responsible for providing information, appropriate genetic testing and support to families at risk of hereditary cancer syndrome (primarily breast, ovarian, and colon cancer). Additionally, the genetic counselor will be responsible for staff, community, and referring physician education regarding genetic counseling. Also, the Genetic Counselor would attend tumor boards in order to participate in the multidisciplinary treatment discussions to optimize patient care.
WHAT WILL YOU DO:
Responsible for staff, community, and referring physician education regarding genetic counseling.
Implement and discuss clinical genetics protocols in response to changing clinical needs and information with genetics staff and referring physician. Participate in tumor boards, journal club and staff discussions.
Obtain patient's medical records and reports as necessary, for genetic counseling purposes.
Promote patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
Cooperate in obtaining and providing information necessary to bill for genetics services.
Collect and review pertinent medical data and obtain a three-generation family history.
Communicate genetic risks, medical information and testing options to patients in a non-directive, supportive, understandable manner.
Communicate findings and recommendations regarding patient counseling session to referring physician.
Coordinate further testing and monitor and assess patient outcome.
Work closely with the medical geneticist reviewing cases, developing genetics protocols and communicating relevant information.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Master's degree in Human Genetics
Board eligible and Licensed Genetic Counselor
Highly motivated and strong communication skills
Customer service orientated
MS (Board Eligible) and Licensed in Illinois Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Ability to perform job functions outside of building at different clinic sites.
Ability to work independently and make patient care decisions.
If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
