To provide genetic counseling for prenatal or preconception genetic counseling to high risk patients and family members. Clients are referred for AMA, abnormal serum screening, sonographic abnormalities, family history of genetic syndromes and birth defects, and pregnancy exposures.To represent Christiana Care Health System in State and regional activities regarding genetic services.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prenatal Genetics: To provide prenatal or preconception genetic counseling to high risk patients and family members. Clients are referred for AMA, abnormal serum screening, sonographic abnormalities, family history of genetic syndromes and birth defects, and pregnancy exposures. Identify areas for additional education for physicians, healthcare providers and community. To maintain the prenatal risk database and create pedigrees using the progeny software. To provide coverage for adult, cancer and cardiovascular genetics as needed.
Works with the appropriate physician or health care professionals in supporting consultation requests from persons or families with a history of birth defects, genetic disorders, or at risk for aneuploidy. In addition provide genetic consultation when needed for coverage for certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, adult-onset genetic conditions or adults with genetic conditions. Obtains and interprets information from multiple sources to identify counseling needs and provide the care needed.
Demonstrates skills and knowledge to provide genetic counseling for Adult clients. Communicates follow-up and action plan with referring physician or health professional and client.
Develops and coordinates educational programs for professional cancer health care personnel within CCHS.
Initiates, writes, administers and/or coordinates educational and research grants in both principal and collaborative investigations. Writes and publishes in peered reviewed journals.
Educates professionals informally in daily clinical situations or multi-disciplinary team conferences.
Maintains required credentials; completes mandatory inservice programs as scheduled; assumes responsibility for ongoing professional growth; exhibits a high level of professionalism; acts as role model for staff and others in the organization.
Maintains current knowledge of genetic counseling issues in prenatal and preconception counseling.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling. Certified Genetic Counselor or Board eligible, or certified Genetic Nurse Practitioner, or physician.
Certification and ongoing certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling required for continued employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of genetics and the impact on oncology.
Knowledge of clinical oncology care.
Knowledge of information systems and high risk family cancer registries.
Knowledge of Performance Improvement process.
Skilled in oral and written communications.
Skilled in listening to others.
Ability to counsel patients according to genetic counseling standards.
Ability to counsel patients who have inheritable genetic defects.
Ability to counsel patients when there is a genetic impact of abnormal findings.
Ability to respond appropriately and effectively to patient’s crisis situations.
Ability to use common computer software for daily work and data input and retrieval.
Ability to collaborate with clinicians and other staff and maintain positive working relationships.
Ability to exercise tact, judgment and diplomacy.
Ability to relate to people in a manner to gain confidence and establish support; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Master’s degree for an accredited Genetic Counseling program.
American Board of Genetic Counseling eligible or certified.
Delaware License for Genetic Counseling (provisional or full)
