The SPL Histotechnologist is responsible for cutting, staining and preparing tissue samples for the pathologist to review. Performs all routine and special staining, immunohistochemical assays (HTL) and frozen sections in accordance with accepted practices and procedures. They are also responsible for prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner and maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. The SPL Histo Techs are also responsible for driving the SPL mobile laboratory units in a safe and economical manner, completing their daily responsibilities in the mobile laboratory units as scheduled and transporting physicians, coworkers and equipment to and from the customer site and maintenance facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Perform all routine and special staining, immunohistochemical assays and frozen sections in accordance with accepted practices and procedures
Perform gross examination and description of surgical specimens; inspects, measures and describes pathology specimens to obtain the initial diagnostic information
Prioritize testing procedures and completes those procedures in an accurate and timely manner and maintains proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations
Use automated equipment and instruments including microscopes, microtomes and other lab equipment
Receive specimen/tissues from procedures and prepares sections for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to embed, freeze, cut and stain tissue
Assist in gross specimen examination
Trim tissue specimens into blocks and fix tissue into fixing solution or formalin
Prepare slides of specimens using specified stain to enhance visibility under microscope
Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements
Fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist
Prepare media, chemicals, reagents and solutions
Maintain accurate documentation, including computerized documentation, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations
Participate in established quality control programs
Maintain inventory of supplies, material and equipment; maintain and clean equipment, instruments and mobile laboratory unit as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.

ASCP histotechnologist (HTL) certification and Florida Histo Tech license
Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client/patient information
Some overnight travel is required
Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions and OSHA standards for the healthcare professional
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record with proof of insurability
Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members
Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner
Ability to work at least 40 hours per week on a consistent and routine basis, some overnights and ability to work overtime if needed and pre-approved, for full time positions.
Bachelor's degree in Histotechnology or an equivalent science or Associates degree with courses needed to meet grossing/high complexity testing requirements, as outlined by CAP and CLIA
Prior Grossing experience a plus
