Learn more The Mental Health Service Line is currently recruiting for a Psychologist at the Mather location of the VA Northern California Health Care System. The purpose of this position is to function as a Behavioral Medicine Psychologist embedded within the specialty interdisciplinary pain management team. The incumbent may serve as a member of the interdisciplinary pain management team. This includes but is not limited to adjustment to chronic medical illness, pain management, sleep disorders, weight loss, smoking cessation, and non-adherence to medical treatment regimens. The modalities include but are not limited to individual, group, couples, and family psychotherapies and other interventions such as biofeedback, hypnosis, and environmental interventions. The incumbent may utilize telehealth as appropriate. Common mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, severe mental illness, and substance use problems may be addressed as secondary issues. However, primary mental health concerns, including acute crises and walk-ins, are referred to the appropriate Behavioral Health team/program for assessment and treatment planning/coordination. The Behavioral Medicine has advanced knowledge of culturally sensitive psychological assessment techniques, diagnosis, intervention, and behavioral health that qualifies him/her to provide advice and consultation to professionals representing a variety of disciplines. The incumbent is also required to exercise judgment in the selection of or adaptation of standard and accepted psychological theories, techniques, and practices in treating patients or developing new techniques and programs for the treatment of clinical populations. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions in specialty medicine pain clinic. Consults with staff and other services regarding the psychological components of pain and the impact on patient functioning and overall health. Provides psychological evaluations pertaining to pain management. May also provide other Behavioral Medicine appropriate pre-surgical evaluations as appropriate. Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment for a wide range of psychological and behavioral medicine issues for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions and disabilities. Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions in specialty medical clinics, Primary Care clinics, and through behavioral medicine consults/referrals that include empirically validated treatments for anxiety and depression, sleep disorders, behavioral pain management strategies (including various relaxation strategies, mindfulness, hypnosis), motivational enhancement interventions, couples/family interventions, smoking cessation, weight loss, psychoeducational interventions and crisis interventions. Develops person-centered, culturally sensitive treatment plans to address comorbid medical/mental health needs of patients. Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues on an outpatient basis. Tracks consultations and provides timely contact with newly referred patients. Completes all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.
