The Staff Psychologist (Pain) provides a full range of psychological and substance abuse services for Veterans with pain related disorders. The incumbent will use the most appropriate evidence-based psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care involving individual and group psychotherapy, development of individualized treatment recommendations, setting of treatment goals, utilization of specialized approaches with groups, as well as numerous other skills available to the experienced clinical psychologist. As a provider experienced in behavioral treatment of chronic pain, the incumbent may consult with and participate in treatment planning within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Service and Mental Health (MH)/Substance Use Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program (SUD IOP). Providing urgent and emergency care to Veterans is expected of all staff members. Duties include, but are not limited to: Provide consultation to the PM&R Service interdisciplinary pain team, and Opioid Safety Initiative committees with direct relevance to assessment related to chronic pain and related headache, and/or treatment of the same; Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues and is involved in program evaluation activities; Participates in developing and maintaining an effective relationship between the PM&R Service, Primary Care Mental Health Integration team (PCMHI), and the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) within the Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS); Provides therapeutic interventions including but not limited to: cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, relaxation training, and other evidence-based behavioral medicine interventions; Timely completion of all clinical charting, clinical reminders, performance measures, and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate. Serving on task groups or administrative committees related to the Opioid Safety Initiative, PM&R, Psychology, SUD IOP, or AVAHCS at the direction or approval of the Chief of Psychology, AVAHCS.
