The SUDRP/OSC Social Worker provides clinical social work services to Veterans receiving substance use treatment and recovery services in the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center's Substance Use Disorder Recovery Program SUDRP/OSC), including Veterans receiving treatment for opioid substance dependence through substitution with another pharmaceuticals. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. (Indiana requires Licensed Clinical Social Worker-LCSW) May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: Experience working with individuals with Substance Use Disorders Grade Determinations: GS 11: Experience and Licensure. Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, (VA or non VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR Education. In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. In addition to the experience above, candidates must be able to demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. (b) Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. (c) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. The SUDRP Social Worker will work with Veterans to gather and evaluate information pertinent to treatment planning and goal setting, and with the Veteran's consent, the SUDRP Social Worker will gather and evaluate information form collateral sources. The goal of the assessment process is to not only gather data from these sources, but to appropriately analyze the information to assist the Veteran in identifying strengths and perceived barriers, inter/external supports and overall service need to optimize the Veteran's function status.\nTreatment Planning/Goal Setting - The SUDRP Social Worker works closely with the Veteran to develop a mutually agreed upon treatment plan, which builds on the analysis of information gathered in the assessment and the strengths and perceived barriers identified by the Veteran. The SUDRP Social Worker will work with the Veteran to develop goals and objectives that are specific, measurable, realistic, and time limited. The plan will be written in a way to ensure the coordination of services provided by the SUDRP Social Worker. The plan will be completed within 15 days of admission to the program and updated when there are changes in patient condition and/or circumstances that impact care outcomes.\nCase Management/Discharge Planning - The SUDRP Social Worker will oversee the coordination of services in which the Veteran participates, both through VA and community agencies. The SUDRP Social Worker may function as the Mental Health Treatment Coordinator for the veteran, overseeing the Veteran's care in Psychiatry Service and ensuring that he or she accesses the most appropriate level of treatment in the least restrictive environment. The SUDRP Social Worker will collaborate with other service providers in reassessing the Veteran's needs. The SUDRP Social Worker is responsible for ensuring the other mental health providers and VA staff are educated on the available VA and community substance abuse\nservices/resources, and for assisting the Veterans in accessing those services and resources based on the Veteran's preferences.\nResource Usage/Development - The SUDRP Social Worker will participate in the review and development of psychosocial resources needed to assist substance abusing Veterans in overcoming the psychosocial consequences of their addictions.
