The Clinical Dietetic Technician provides basic Nutrition Care for Patients and supports the Clinical Dietitians in Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) at the San Diego VA Healthcare System. The Clinical Dietetic Technician works with the Interdisciplinary team members, Veterans, the Veteran's family, and-the community. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/20/2023. Education Requirement: Candidates must have successfully completed a course of study in an accredited college leading to an associate's degree in Dietetic Technology with an emphasis in Nutrition Care or the equivalent post-secondary education. In determining whether a candidate's education is equivalent, close attention should be paid to the numbers and types of courses completed and their content. The education should provide the candidate with the KSAOs listed above, particularly numbers 1 through 5 (KSAOs 6 and 7 can generally be acquired through experience). To do this it must have included instruction in nutrition care/diet therapy, the natural sciences (e.g., anatomy, physiology, biochemistry), social sciences (e. g., psychology, sociology), food sciences, medical terminology, communications and education. Because course titles vary, it is important to carefully evaluate course content in order to determine that these subjects are covered. In addition, qualifying education must include supervised field experience in a hospital or similar clinical setting. OR An associate's degree in Dietetic Technology (Nutrition Care) from a program approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is preferred. Because the occupational study on which this standard is based showed graduates of these programs to be better equipped to provide substantive assistance and support to Clinical Dietitians, they should be given preferential consideration in the applicant evaluation process. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. Candidates who meet the education requirements described above are fully qualified for the GS-4 level. To qualify for higher grades, candidates must have had progressively responsible experience in the field of clinical dietetic technology in which they have demonstrated successful use of the KSAOs listed in the General Requirements section of this standard. Candidates for GS-5 positions must have at least six months of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4. Candidates for GS-6 and above must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grad To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the duties of the position including those necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and population specific needs of the patients served. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of Human Nutrition Requirements In Health And Disease. Ability to Gather Data from the Medical Record and Document Information Pertinent to Nutritional Care. Ability to Monitor and Influence the Patient's Nutritional Intake. Ability to Provide Nutrition Education for Selected Groups of Patients. Skill in Patient Interviewing and Nutrition Counseling Ability to Interact and Communicate Orally with People from a Variety of Backgrounds. Ability to Function Effectively in a Support Position within a Clinical Dietetic Section of a General Medical and Surgical and/or Psychiatric Hospital. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, such as meal trays, instruction material, books and manuals. Some of the work is sedentary, such as computer activities. Computer entry of electronic progress notes, entailing multiple episodes of keyboard stokes is a daily responsibility. It may be necessary to push electronic equipment and arrange classroom areas in preparation of classes.
