The Director of Hospital Laboratory Services provides strategic and operational leadership for all hospital-based laboratories across Atlantic Health's seven-hospital system. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, efficient, and compliant laboratory operations that support clinical excellence and organizational goals.
The Director sets departmental goals, establishes standards of practice, and oversees medical, technical, and administrative functions across all laboratory sites. They ensure full compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies, including CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission, while driving continuous improvement in service delivery and quality outcomes.
As the primary liaison with hospital executive teams and medical leadership, the Director collaborates closely with CLIA directors, nursing leaders, and other stakeholders to address service needs, introduce new capabilities, and monitor performance through service level agreements and quality metrics.
The Director also leads financial planning and budget management in conjunction with the Director of Business Operations, applying LEAN A3 methodology to optimize resources and investigate variances. They oversee staffing, recruitment, and leadership development, ensuring alignment with productivity benchmarks and system-wide standards.
This role requires a visionary leader with deep expertise in laboratory science, regulatory compliance, and enterprise operations--someone capable of driving innovation while maintaining excellence across a complex, multi-site healthcare environment.
Essential Functions:
- Leads and evaluates managers, supervisors, and staff across all hospital-based laboratories.
- Collaborates with VP, Medical Director, ACL Director, Business Operations Director, Technical Directors, Quality Director and CLIA Directors to align goals, budgets, staffing, and equipment needs.
- Oversees quality assurance programs and prepares monthly service level reports for hospital executive leadership.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies across all laboratory operations.
- Develops and manages departmental budgets, capital planning, and financial strategies using A3 Practical Problem-Solving methodology.
- Implements and maintains data systems for lab operations, reporting, and inventory control.
- Coordinates laboratory services across departments and facilities to ensure consistency and excellence.
- Recruits, develops, and manages leadership talent; evaluates staffing using benchmarking and productivity tools.
- Establishes standardized team member policies and practices in collaboration with ACL and VP of Laboratory Services.
- Engages with vendors, educators, and academic institutions to support innovation and growth.
Salary range: $163,702 - $306,130 base only; excludes all incentives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Laboratory Science, or related field required; Master's degree or MBA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital laboratory operations.
- Proven track record of managing multi-site laboratory services in a complex health system.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission).
- Demonstrated expertise in financial management, quality assurance, and team development.
- Experience with the implementation of test utilization strategies in partnership with health system colleagues
- LEAN Six Sigma certification or equivalent process improvement experience preferred.
